Abstract:
The Internet and computer networks are exposed to an adding number
of security risks. With new types of attacks appearing continually, developing flexible and
adaptive security acquainted approaches is a severe challenge. This paper explores the
critical role of firewalls in enhancing network security by providing a robust defense
mechanism against unauthorized access and cyber threats. Firewalls act as gatekeepers,
monitoring and filtering inbound and outbound traffic based on predetermined security
rules. This research delves into the evolution of firewall technologies, from traditional
packet filtering to next-generation firewalls (NGFW) that integrate advanced features such
as intrusion detection and prevention, deep packet inspection, and application-level
monitoring. The study highlights the importance of firewall deployment in securing
enterprise networks and mitigating risks associated with malware, data breaches,
Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. Furthermore, it investigates best practices for firewall configuration and management to ensure optimal protection. By examining the
impact of firewalls on modern cybersecurity strategies, this research underscores their
continued relevance as a cornerstone of network security architecture.
